FAQs

WHY SHAKESPEARE?
Though the language in Shakespeare's plays is difficult to understand, the plots and characters are fairly simple and relatable. They are an excellent foundation when exploring acting techniques.

WHY "ROMEO & JULIET"?
The plots, characters, and themes (of rivalry, jealousy, love, death, forgiveness) are so timeless that you can perform the play in almost any context. Look up "Romeo & Juliet: Sealed with a Kiss", for example. It's the story, but with seals.

WHAT ABOUT THE INAPPROPRIATE STUFF?
Romeo & Juliet has some adult content: sex, language, violence. We will take the sexual content out of the materials we use in class. Of course, the title characters are in love and get married, but we'll stay away from innuendos, kissing and wedding nights, focusing instead on innocent romance and age-appropriate displays of affection. There are some darker elements, but we will keep the class light and lean into the humorous, exciting (ie. sword fighting), and romantic aspects of the show
**Please note that suicide is a crucial plot point in this play. As a parent/guardian please consider whether this is a good fit for your child.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
It costs $30 per student. Rocky Mountain Student Performing Arts is a brand new theater education program for homeschoolers and all young performers in Northern Colorado. 15% of your fee goes to support the library, the remainder goes to funding RMSPA as we seek to become a 501(c)3.

WHAT'S THE CLASS SIZE/RATIO?
Registration is capped at 16 students. There is one instructor.

CAN PARENTS/GUARDIANS STAY?
Parents are welcome to drop off and leave the premises, or stick around at the library. For parents who remain at the library, please feel free to check in during the class time, but I do highly recommend letting your child engage in the material and with their peers without your immediate supervision! Kids are generally less self-conscious in a learning-performing environment when family isn't watching.

SO WHAT IS THIS?
For the first 1.5 hours of the class, we'll use games, white boards, books, singing, cardboard swords and more to learn the plot, characters and language of the play. Then we'll break into groups and dig into specific scenes. Kids will use improv and some original text, to act out the scenes exploring key acting techniques including objectives, obstacles, and tactics. We'll do a very mini-performance for classmates and family at the end.

WHO'S THE INSTRUCTOR?
My name is Jessamine Unruh, I'm a Colorado Native who currently resides in Firestone. I have over two decades of experience in performing, producing, and teaching theater, and homeschool my three young children. I have my Colorado Adjunct Instructor Authorization and am background checked. Navigate to the "about" page to learn more.
