The building blocks

Program Overview

Practical application

Spring Semester

By "building blocks" we mean the various techniques and skills that comprise the actor's tool-kit. We will:

  • Work through Stephen Book's Improvisation Technique as a class

  • Learn to "Behave truthfully under imaginary circumstances" (Sanford Meisner)

  • Discover that "acting is action" (Stanislavski)

  • Practice audition skills

  • Practice memorization skills

  • Learn vocal and physical techniques for performance

  • Do regular text analysis

  • Study Shakespeare's plays

Assignments include

  • Prepare and perform a 2 minute monologue

  • Audition for the Fall showcase

  • Perform scenes with other actors in the fall showcase

  • Keep a journal of your journey as an artist

  • Continue working through Stephen Book's Improvisation Technique as a class

  • Engage with the components of producing a play; including basic stage makeup and set design/construction

  • Further hone audition and memorization skills

  • Practice the concept of "goals and tactics"

We'll expand our craft in the second half of the class by applying those skills we learned last semester.

  • Audition for the Spring play

  • Attend rehearsals (within regular class time)

  • Create a theater resume

  • Perform full-length play for a paying audience
